- Cucumber and calamansi in the Old Sage kitchen garden.
- A sesame field in bloom around an ancient temple in Bagan, Myanmar.
- Spot the two sesames! Black sesame is not the same as black cumin or black seed. These are three different seeds. Sesame is much more than those little seeds on top of your burger bun. The seeds and oil were used by the Chinese at least 5,000 years ago, and for centuries they have burned the oil to make soot for writing. The ancient Romans ground sesame seeds with cumin to make a pasty spread for bread. It was used in ancient Egypt and ancient India for medicinal and culinary purposes. The ancients believed that sesame had mystical powers as shown in the expression “open sesame,” from the Arabian Nights tale of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves." Sesame is an unsung hero in our apothecary as pure sesame seed oil is added in a small measure to every batch of Old Sage soap as the finishing touch.
