Additional Photos: Incense sticks burn at an ancient altar in Japan. In ancient times the wood of the fragrant agar (oud) tree, native to India, was used to make incense sticks.  Nowadays unsurprisingly, agarwood is scarce but the practice of burning incense in some form or the other continues and is common to all cultures. High-grade Japanese incense is made from a mixture of frankincense, oud, sandalwood, agalloch and other materials.

Thean Hou Temple, Kuala Lumpur wears a festive air. (Sean Ong @seanong).  Incense is burned every day, especially during Chinese New Year.  Ancient Chinese texts describe the fragrance of oud as being "sweet, deep and balanced" which we feel is rather apt.
